On April 5, 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolfe, one of the colonists at Jamestown. Their marriage helped bring about a period of relative calm between the English and the Powhatan Confederacy. In 1615, Pocahontas and John Rolfe had a son named Thomas. When Thomas was two, his parents took him to England. When their ship left England to return to Virginia, Pocahontas became ill. The ship put in at Gravesend, England, and Pocahontas died on March 21, 1617. John Rolfe returned to Virginia to tell Powhatan of his daughter’s death.

Back in England, he signed on to take part in a colony in Guiana in South America, but that enterprise never got going. It was at that point that Smith joined the Virginia Company of London to help in the establishment of a colony in North America. He played a critical role in keeping the struggling colony going.
