Wells, was at least as influential and just as committed to the notion that the poor needed to be guided. Born the fourth child to parents who kept a small shop in Bromley in 1866, Wells won a scholarship to study at the Normal School (later the Royal College) of Science at South Kensington. H. Huxley. After a spell of teaching, ill health obliged Wells to consider alternative forms of earning a living and he took to writing. Within a remarkably short time he had established himself as a rising star.
