Researchers working over three decades have pointed out potential pitfalls of herbicide treatments on sand shinnery oak prairies. Sand shinnery oak can be completely eliminated at high application rates, reducing food availability and the ability of the habitat to provide suitable microclimates necessary for critical life stages of Lesser Prairie-Chickens (Doerr and Guthery 1983, Olawsky and Smith 1991, Bell et al. 2010). Haukos (2011) summarized the consensus view of researchers that the goal of tebuthiuron treatments for habitat restoration should seek to create a codominant community of shrubs and native grasses interspersed in patchy mosaics, which was the case for the 10,121 ha (25,000 acre) Weaver Ranch near Milnesand, New Mexico.

The Soil Bank was created under Title 1 of the Agricultural Act of 1956, and the program was primarily active during the following five years. The Soil Bank Program was relatively short-lived, but the Conservation Reserve component provided a valuable model for the current Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), which was implemented almost three decades later. Jackson and DeArment (1963:737) referred to the grasslands produced by the Soil Bank Program as “a bright spot in an otherwise not very promising picture” for Lesser Prairie-Chickens.

If herbicide treatments are attempted, Haukos (2011) recommended tebuthiuron should be applied at low rates, should not be applied to sand shinnery oak habitats in poor range condition, and should always be followed by extended grazing deferment with a duration dependent on the subsequent response and climatic conditions.
