The evening before my departure he invited me for a farewell chat. He came to the point immediately. He told me that Reverend Tomkinson had strongly urged Chichester to provide me with the wherewithal to study theology at Cambridge. Was I aware of that? If so, what were my feelings about it? I told him that I had realized that the Church could not be interested in providing funds unless that led to some sort of calling, or at least to a commitment to an ecclesiastical future. I said that I had been thinking about it a great deal, but still had not made up my mind.
