The grain size also determines the contrast or range of gray tones of the film. Color film consists of three layers of emulsion. Since our visual system has three different cones that primarily respond to light in the red, green, and blue part of the spectrum, three light sensitive emulsions are used to capture the incident light in the red, green, and blue parts of the spectrum.

This gave one measurement for the red cone, one measurement for the green cone, and one for the blue cone. Similarly, measurements of the color chips were also obtained from the Munsell books of colors. The measurements were plotted into a graph with the measured radiance of the color Mondrian along one axis and the measured radiance of the matching chip from the Munsell book of colors along the other axis. From this graph, it could be seen that the correlation between the two measurements was not very good.
