On January 19, 2000, a hearth raged throughout the freshman dormitory at Seton corridor college in South Orange, New Jersey, killing 3 scholars and injuring fifty-eight others. one of the sufferers have been Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos, roommates from terrible neighborhoods who made their households proud via moving into university. They controlled to flee the hearth, yet either have been burned terribly.

He chose Saint Joseph’s, but his mother’s dreams almost ended on the first day of classes. A microbiology professor was lecturing about “echinococcus that multiply by schizogony,” and he might as well have been speaking a foreign language. Hani suddenly realized he was in way over his head. He went home and told his mother he wasn’t going back. She, however, had other ideas. And Hani returned. In the end, he knew he couldn’t let her down. For the longest time after earning his medical degree, Mansour couldn’t decide on a specialty.

The next few hours were critical for their survival. He wasn’t sure either would make it through the day. The Simons boy had a fighting chance, but his hands would probably have to be amputated. The Llanos kid would need a miracle to pull through. And if he did survive, Mansour wondered, would he be one of those victims who, after all was said and done, was angry that his life had been saved? The waiting area was jammed with people, crying, praying, glued to a suspended TV set. Mansour glanced up to see what they were watching.

She had seen her share of tragedy during her twenty-year career, but she never got used to the kids. She looked into the boy’s brown eyes and saw sheer terror. When she leaned in close to comfort him, she could feel the heat radiating from his burned skin. She spoke gently, the way she would to one of her own children, thinking that hers could be the last voice the boy ever heard. ” she asked. “Alvaro,” he whispered, a single tear dripping from the corner of his eye. ” The boy on the floor was dead.
